TECHNOLOGY FACILITATION STANDARD VI: Social, Ethical, Legal, and Human Issues Educational technology facilitators understand the social, ethical, legal, and human issues surrounding the use of technology in PK-12 schools and assist teachers in applying that understanding in their practice. Self-Assessment
Current issues related to digital equity, online safety, copyright, and other social, ethical, legal, and human issues require that technology facilitators and leaders structure technology use and educate parents, educators, and students about key issues (Williamson 2009). I cover a unit on internet safety and intellectual property. This subject leads to much discussion especially when the possible legal consequences were shown such as jail time and sex offender labeling for sexting or downloading free music. Learn as a Learner
Richardson (2007) says that we now have the opportunity to teach students to be lifelong learners and to create their own independent learning practice they can carry with them.
Many of the concerns related to online environments are not new, but new technologies have accelerated or provided a new medium for undesirable behaviors (Williamson 2009). Examples are plagiarism and the unauthorized copying of music, movies, and graphics. Using Wiggins and McTighe's "backward design", I created a collaborative project about how copyright laws both protect and benefit society.
Lifelong Learning Skills
Williamson (2009) says that barriers must not prevent educators from being informed, teaching students, and reinforcing legal and ethical behavior in schools. Our media specialist talks to us at the beginning of each school year about intellecutal property and showing "Disney" movies. Our campus administrator is also trying to stop this practice and implemented rules and consequences for those who violate.
